Laser Eye Surgery Statistics

Just like any other surgery, laser surgery also has its risks. According to the U.S. F.D.A, in the United States, more than a million patients undergo laser eye surgery with Lasik surgery every year. The FDA followed up with a study of 1013 eyes which underwent this operation. According to this study, there are complications associated with laser eye surgery in a range which varies between 1% and 5%. The results of the study were the following:

After corrective eye surgery, 1.7% of the patients suffered from photophobia, or an increase in the sensitivity to light. The sensitivity to light is particularly important when looking at a bright light. 3.5% of the patients saw significant halos around lights.

2.6% of the patients who underwent eye surgery experienced significant fluctuations in their vision after the laser surgery and 3% of the patients failed to achieve a good field of vision.

11.9% of the patient’s eyes were not corrected enough (hypo-correction), while 4.2% were corrected too much (hyper-correction). It is important to note that in such cases, undergoing a second laser surgery will usually correct the problem.

According to the FDA, 47% of those patients who underwent Lasik laser eye surgery achieved 20/20 vision or better without contact lenses or glasses. According to the American Association of Professional Eye Care (AAPEC), the percentage of people who achieved a vision of 20/20 or better after laser eye surgery was 55.3%, and those who achieved a 20/25 visions or better where 93% of the patients.
